EU Member State Committee Identifies New SVHC

On October 16, the EU Member State Committee (MSC) announced triphenyl phosphate has been identified as a substance of very high concern (SVHC). European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) plans to add triphenyl phosphate (CAS No. 115-86-6) to the REACH Candidate List in early November due to its endocrine disrupting properties in the environment.

ECHA typically updates the REACH Candidate list biannually in the summer and winter, so this is a dispatch from the normal rhythm of REACH updates. However, it is noted that triphenyl phosphate was added to the Registry of Intentions at the same time as bis(α,α-dimethylbenzyl) peroxide, the SVHC added to the Candidate list in June. Delay of inclusion on the Candidate list for triphenyl phosphate may have been due to the need to accept an alternative test method that replaces a fish study with the non-vertabrate amphipod, Hyalella azteca.

While Q Point anticipates this addition to the Candidate List, it is important to note that the addition is still planned and awaits inclusion by ECHA.
